Fabulous Prizes

She looks beautiful in a respirator. Something about the way it frames her face. Something about the way it makes her eyes look brighter. Even through the plastic face shield, even through the orange haze of smoke that fills the air between you, her eyes are gleaming. You can tell from the small wrinkles forming at their edges that she's smiling. You can tell by the slight catch in her ragged breath that she's smiling. Her backpack sloshes and clinks as she moves toward the row of doors. You watch the way she moves, like there's something inside of her, searching for an exit.
